He explained the need for a coffee upgrade. "Trust me, it's time and you'll love it." She responded that this WAS an upgrade from stealing the coffee pouches from work, so she was stoked about that. He offered her some style tips. "No to the sweater set; you want to look like you're going places! Leave it to me." She laughed and agreed with him that she was going places - she was going to the laundromat at the weekend, and the set currently fit the bill for flattering and also clean. "You know, you work too much; I think it's time to work smarter, not harder," he said, giving her an affectionate squeeze. "I hear that," she sighed, "but what's really smart right now is paying off my debt and having some extra around for emergencies." Later on that day, she sent him a text asking for his takeout order, promising a proper couch-surfing sendoff with wine (letting him know in this way that she would not be extending his time at her place). "I'm hopeful things are turning around for him," she said (in a phone conversation with his next host). "Maybe he'll find a way to get paid for always being right."
