Observation
Toby saw the tiny gesture through his binoculars (purposeful and often repeated). He noted that, whenever the gesture was made, its companion found something it had been digging for in the yard. No one slunk away empty-handed. "I see you," Toby whispered while staring out the window of his room, "and I'll not cause trouble for you." In his secret notebook, Toby wrote "Squirrel Witch" at the top of its own page and made a quick sketch of the creature and the gesture. He also made a note to pick up some dried corn and crushed walnut fragments at the feed store to make a kind of "creature crunch" as a gesture of good will. He would remain this way for life, tending to the magic that others refused to see.
